Other Cinema Digital (OCD), a new West Coast media-arts initiative, will formally inaugurate its alternative-cinema distribution project with a series of free public screenings, demos, and receptions in both Northern and Southern California from October 15 to October 24.

Built on 20 years of weekly microcinema programming experience (the Other Cinema series at the legendary A.T.A. Gallery in San Francisco's Mission district), the artist-run enterprise now plans to release DVD features and compilations from its stable of makers for wide-scale dissemination to private collectors and cineastes

Four of these special DVD editions are scheduled for publication over the fourth quarter of 2003. The two Los Angeles release events are being co-hosted by two galleries, one from the downtown area and the other from the city's west side. That seaside celebration would be at Sponto Gallery, at 7 Dudley Ave. in Venice (310.399.2078). The Wed. Oct. 22 show starts at 8pm with a screening , in its 90-min. entirety , of OCD's initial offering, "Spectres of the Spectrum". An official selection for the Whitney Biennial, the collage- style sci-fi allegory will be introduced by its director, Craig Baldwin. A past Alpert, Rockefeller, and Dow Foundation Fellow, Mr. Baldwin will also demonstrate the disc's 'Special Features', plus unveil several anomalous "media-archeological artifacts" that heavily figured into "Spectres"' concept-development phase.

On Fri. Oct. 24, Mr. Baldwin and his editors move the show to the Downtown arts district, with an 8:00 opening at Cirrus Gallery (542 S. Alameda; 213.680.3473). At the Cirrus, choice clips from all 4 OCD editions will be projected on a 16-foot screen, 'Experiments in Terror', a collection of experimental horror films, 'The Subject is Sex', a playful romp through cinema's erotic underbelly, and Bill Morrison's "Decasia", an exquisite re-working of deteriorating nitrate emulsion.. The short pieces will alternate with live video-mixing from LA's own Animal Charm, a two-man digital performance ensemble whose own portfolio is slated for an '04 OCD release. As a special bonus attraction, we will also offer the spectacular baton-twirling of OCD mascot Dangercrowe.

About Spectres of The Spectrum (http://www.othercinema.com/sos.html)

SPECTRES OF THE SPECTRUM is an energized science-fantasy allegory on autonomous resistance against the globalization of the communications industry, and a critique of America's military-industrial horror show. Besides a new digital soundtrack, the DVD will include behind-the-scenes footage, a clip from the 'Science in Action' TV Show that inspired the film, and a Director's Commentary from Mr. Baldwin himself -- "an adrenaline-driven dervish of information, history, and advocacy who can't help but stir things up." - Holly Willis, 'LA Weekly'.

About OCD (http://www.othercinemaDVD.com)

The Other Cinema Digital project provides an alternative platform for the distribution of extraordinary film works. We celebrate peculiar visions and offbeat sensibilities, drawn from the contemporary underground as well as the archives. Be it auteur, exploitation, or industrial, OCD delivers a decidedly different audio-visual experience -- opening up spaces both marvelous and dangerous.
